But surely if people really wanted pub drinking more than cheap drinking the supermarkets/chains wouldn’t succeeded.

Doesn’t economics say that people want cheap drinks over pub atmosphere?

When I pay £7.50 for a cocktail in a swanky bar, I’m saying I value the cool looking bar and the funky vibe over buying 40 units of cheap cider and drinking it the street corner. At least thats what I think I’m saying when I vote for the swanky bar with my economic purchase.

I think what's interesting is that the free market actually isn't operating in this case on any effective level. Vested interests such as supermarkets and pub chains are warping the system.

Pubs can’t cross subside booze like supermarkets.

Also adding cheap beer to the supermarket lineup doesn’t increase costs much. But it would decrease a pubs profit margin.

I mean I agree with you, but I can’t see any solution. The open market is vaguely speaking about where people value the money and regulation isn’t the answer (I don’t think). The problem is that you and I disagree with what the open market is determining.

soft drinks are ludicrous. In my local, a coke costs £2.50 not much less than a pint :((

Since the pint tastes considerably better, where is the incentive?
